AMUSE Newsletter

[May 17, 2013]

Dear members of AMUSE,

The following are updates for this week:

  1. Collective Agreement (CA) Spotlight - Seniority & Subsequent Contracts
  2. Keep an eye out for our Outreach Coordinators
  3. Coffee and Snacks with AMUSE this Tuesday
  4. Office Hours

1. Collective Agreement Spotlight

Did you know that our CA contains a measure of seniority? Seniority is applicable only within a Hiring Unit, but it can still work to your advantage!

First, if you have completed your probationary period*, and another employee has not, you have seniority, meaning that you should be first offered any subsequent contracts. Note that this is the case both when the subsequent contract is for the same or a similar assignment to the one to which you are currently tasked, and when it is different, or of a more substantive nature.

Second, if all candidates interested in subsequent contracts within the Hiring Unit have passed their probationary period, and have “equal skills, ability, availability, and qualifications,” (CA, 18.07) - length of Service in the Hiring Unit prevails.

If you’re not sure what you’re Hiring Unit is, or whether the following information applies to a circumstance in your workplace, send us an e-mail at [email protected]!

  • Probationary period: For Group 1 employees this is 60 days. For Group 3 employees, this is 3 consecutive academic terms (excluding the summer term, if you did not work).

2. Keep an eye out for our Outreach Coordinators!

You may recall that earlier this year, AMUSE hired 3 Outreach Coordinators to visit members at their multiple and varied locations, assist with preparing events, and work to make connections in the workplace. So don’t be surprised if you or one of your colleagues receives a visit from either Daria, Laura, or Liv - the 2013 AMUSE Outreach Coordinators!
Daria, Laura, and Liv, will be visiting employee locations on both the Downtown and Macdonald Campus this summer to answer members questions, have discussions about working conditions, encourage committee participation, promote AMUSE events, and hopefully .. to make friends!

If you have any questions for our Outreach Coordinators, or would like to set a specific time where they come visit you in the workplace, send an e-mail to either of them at [email protected].

3. Coffee and Snacks with AMUSE

Once again we will be hosting an all-afternoon AMUSE employee coffee break. You are invited to come and meet AMUSE representatives, share your working experiences on campus, and learn about the union and your rights as a casual employee on campus. We will have copies of the Collective Agreement and other information about your working conditions at McGill.

Tuesday, May 21, 2013, 12:00pm until 4:30pm
Students’ Society of McGill University (3600 rue McTavish),
