Bargaining updates
The AMUSE Bargaining Team and McGill met yesterday and have finalized some articles pertaining to Employee Files. We are also closing down on an agreement regarding Health and Safety issues. We are now discussing one of the most important demands in our bargaining priority list, which is seniority. The following bargaining meeting will be devoted to laying out all the details and variables that come into play with seniority, taking into account AMUSE’s diverse membership.
As for earlier meetings, we have drafted and agreed to articles pertaining to
- the scope and nature of the bargaining unit (who and what is a casual worker?)
- union recognition, information sharing, union dues, the relationship between McGill and
AMUSE - anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policies
- definitions of terms
- the rights of management
- the rights of union, such as office space, “liberation” from work of union members in order to
do union work - grievance resolution procedures, setting up a Labour Relations Committee to facilitate
communication between Management and the Union, and arbitration - Employee files

Call for Stewards
Stewards are the eyes, ears and limbs of the union, directly interacting with the membership and representing their concerns and aspirations. The stewards are the cornerstones of any union, and are present across departments to make sure that employees’ rights are not being infringed upon and are a friendly face for anyone with questions about their work conditions, their rights as workers and members of AMUSE, and the union.
A steward acts as a resource for both the membership and the Labour Relations Officer and any member is eligible to become a steward. All stewards have the opportunity to sit on the Board of Representatives.
AMUSE is currently recruiting stewards. We have around 1500 members working all over campus, and while the execs are committed to serving the best interest of the membership, our hands and limbs can only reach so far. We need the role of stewards to channel the concerns and aspirations of casual workers in your workplace. Stewards working in the Bookstore, Athletics, Libraries and University Services are particularly coveted! These departments hire lots of casuals to keep running.
Interested members should contact the Labour Relations Officer at [email protected]
Big MUNACA Rally this Friday
The presidents of PSAC-National and PSAC-Quebec, AMUSE’s parent union, are visiting MUNACA picketers this Friday. A big rally is planned for the occasion. Everyone is invited! Labour and student groups at McGill will take part. Show MUNACA workers your support, and meet your PSAC presidents and AMUSE executives (we’ll be holding AMUSE signs and pins)!
Where? Intersection McGill College and Sherbrooke, just in front of Roddick Gates
When? 1:30 PM
