Brief Bargaining Updates

Bargaining with McGill will accelerate at a much faster pace from the month of October. We’ve requested additional dates which were agreed upon by both parties. Now, instead of meeting once in two weeks, we will bargain once a week. We hope this will allow us to reach an agreement soon, so that all casual workers can receive the protection and benefits of a collective agreement as soon as possible.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected].

How the MUNACA strike have been affecting casuals: raise your voice!

The strike has affected all members in the McGill community. Casual workers in particular are in a lot of pressure. We are in the crossfire between McGill and MUNACA. We have had cases of late payment of wages, reduced hours because of refusing to cross the picket lines, increased hours to fill up MUNACA hours, pressure from managers to do MUNACA work, and last but not least, accusations of strikebreaking. McGill should know better than to violate the law.

I want to reiterate that in many cases casual workers stand in a grey area because many of them do not have job descriptions, contracts, fixed schedules, etc. If you have been disadvantaged during the course of this strike, do let the AMUSE executive know. We have a mandate not only to demand better working conditions and our member’s well-being, but also to protect AMUSE work. Contact Dave Howden, our Labour Relations Officer if you feel you fall under the problems listed above. His email is [email protected].

We support MUNACA in their demands for a fair contract. Because we work so closely with them a lot of what we are asking for at bargaining are also things they demand and which McGill refuses to give.

However, we acknowledge that the strike has had a negative impact on casual workers in the ways described above. The AMUSE executives are here to alleviate any of that burden. We are casual workers helping out casual workers.

Sincerely,
Fariduddin Attar Rifai
President AMUSE

Teach-in and rally protesting injunction against MUNACA picketers

An injunction was granted by the courts that restricts the picketing movements of the MUNACA members. Student and Labour groups on campus are getting together for a teach in and short rally to show the Administration and the McGill community that MUNACA member’s cause are still voiced on campus.

As MUNACA members lost their right to exercise their free speech, we should be their mouthpiece in campus by exercising ours.

Here are the details:

When? Tomorrow (Wednesday), 11:30 AM-2:00 PM
Where? In front of Shatner Building
