Salut union friend! Welcome to this week’s jam-packed listserv! Please take a minute to read through some very important information for Group 2s, and other upcoming AMUSE funtimes!
Race and Work
A discussion amongst people of colour, mixed race, indigenous, black, visible minority workers at McGill (Hosted by AMUSE)
Event organized by Shaina, a queer femme fairy, student, worker, Outreach Coordinator at AMUSE and co-creator of Race at McGill
What is distinct, similar, and different about our experiences as racialized workers at McGill and outside of McGill? How can we share our experiences in ways that are supportive? What are the possibilities and limitations of mobilizing around race and ethnicity as workers, and why might it be important nonetheless? This discussion aims to explore these questions and other questions and topics participants have around race and work @ McGill and beyond.
Date: Wednesday, October 14th
Time: 5:45 PM - 7:45 PM
Location: Union for Gender Empowerment Office, 413, 4th floor of SSMU Building, 3480 Rue McTavish
ATTENTION: Group 2 MUNACA Replacement Workers
Group 2 members are members working full-time replacing MUNACA members who have a contract of fewer than 6 months.
If you’re a Group 2 member, you are entitled to 80% of the salary of the MUNACA member you are replacing. Why? Because you should only be doing 80% of their duties! We encourage all Group 2 members to speak with their supervisors to ensure that your contract is in accordance with the intent of our Collective Agreement article 22.02. If you are doing 100% of the tasks of the person whom you are replacing, you can meet with your supervisor to determine which 20% of the duties stipulated in your contract you’ll no longer be responsible for. A union representative can be present at this meeting, if you would like to request one. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Molly at [email protected] or Claire at [email protected].
AMUSE-MUNACA Film Screening of “At The River I Stand”
Come join us at Chez Boris (5151 Parc) next Friday, October 9th at 6pm for a movie, some snax, and friends! We’ll be screening “At The River I Stand,” a powerful documentary that follows the two months in 1968 leading up to Martin Luther King Jr’s murder, focusing on the mobilization by racialized African American workers to unionize the Memphis sanitation workers. All free of charge, and to be followed by a facilitated discussion!
Accessibility information: There is a 6” step to enter the cafe; the front door is 35” wide and swings outward. The main space is flat, except for the bathroom which is up two steps (7” and 7.5”) and too narrow to fit most wheelchairs. There are no fluorescent lights. Please contact our VP Internal for more info.
AMUSE’s Board of Representatives’ meeting update
As always, our Board meeting was super exciting! After going over Exec reports, we voted in a new Board member, Bradley, and Annie was voted in as our new co-chair. We also discussed and approved discretionary requests to School Schmool, Toxic Tour, and Perverscite, as well as a Hardship Funding request to an AMUSE member. As always, let us know if you want to know more!
15 and Fair Campaign
The joint campaign, including AMUSE, calling for McGill to establish a $15/hr minimum wage and fair working conditions is ramping up! You can find more information about what we’re calling for here, including a motion which we hope McGill departmental and other associations will endorse. If you want to get involved, we need help! Just email me for more info.
We’re on the airwaves, every Monday from 11am - noon!
AMUSE host’s CKUT’s All Things McGill radio show every Monday at 11am! We have a bunch of fun chatting with folks organizing things at McGill, from union work to anti-austerity organizing to highlighting cool groups on campus. If you have anything you think should be on air, feel free to contact me!
Let’s Talk about Teacher
Following a publication in The McGill Daily on September 1st in which a student describes their experiences of sleeping with a McGill professor,“Let’s Talk About Teacher”, the Daily has launched an anonymous story-sharing platform for other folks wishing to share similar experiences.
