Part-time workers! Are you being properly remunerated?
As you may know, part-time casual employees are divided in our Collective Agreement (article 22.03) into 3 groups, informatively named A, B, and C. The minimum hourly rates for employees for these groups are $10.55, $11.22, and $12.24, respectively. AMUSE is trying to make sure these ‘class’ descriptions are being respected and will be taking action this Fall to ensure that you are properly being paid!
If you’re making $10.55/hr, you are classified as Class A. Would you say that this adequately describes the difficulty of your position? (basic assistance tasks) : “few tasks, complexity low, little autonomy, minimal experience required” If not, would you say your position fits better in to Class B? (complex assistance tasks) “several tasks, moderate complexity, relative autonomy, moderate experience required” or Class C? (coordination tasks) “many tasks, high complexity, great level of autonomy, high experience required”
If you’re not sure, or feel you are being mis-classified, please arrange to have your position re-evaluated by getting in touch with our Labour Relations Officer, Agatha, at [email protected]. Send us a short description of your job and a copy of your pay stub, and we might be able to get your rate of pay up to an appropriate level.
What is the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC)?
You may have noticed that we often talk about the PSAC, or have their logos on our communications, but do you know who they are?
The Public Service Alliance of Canada represents more than 170,000 workers in every province and territory in Canada and in locations around the world. PSAC is AMUSE’s parent union, the organization we are affiliated to on a regional and national level. PSAC provides AMUSE with legal support and training for local activists. Most local unions in the PSAC are actually federal government employees, but in the late 1990s PSAC began to expand into the university sector, especially in Quebec. Two other unions at McGill are affiliated with PSAC - MUNACA and AMURE, representing permanent support staff and research staff, respectively.
Here’s a short video about the PSAC.
