Dear Members of AMUSE,
The following are updates for this month:
- Collective Agreement Signed
- Changing Dues Structure
- Tea Talks and More Ways of Making Your Voice Heard!
- Call Out for Stewards and Chief Stewards
- First Time Hearing from AMUSE? Contact us!
1. Collective Agreement – April 20, 2012 – April 19, 2015
The Collective Agreement between AMUSE and McGill University was signed on April 20th, 2012. Copies of this agreement can be found on the AMUSE website. Hard copies of the Collective Agreement will be available to members of AMUSE in the future.
The Collective Agreement is the result of a year of negotiations between the University and AMUSE, with the goal of improving the work conditions of all members of the union. Upholding the agreement is a collaborative process between the union, the university and the membership. We encourage all members to familiarize themselves with the Collective Agreement - you can start with the Bargaining Team’s explanation which you can find on the AMUSE website.
If you have any questions about the AMUSE Collective Agreement, please contact us at [email protected].
2. Changing Dues Structure
The signing of our Collective Agreement also brings about a change in our dues structure to a percentage based system.
Since accreditation in January 2010 our dues have been set at $2.00 per pay period, however the signing of our first Collective Agreement means that our dues will be changing in accordance to the PSAC Constitution and our own By-Laws (article 7) to a percentage of 1.7%. A percentage system means that members contribute to the union in a more fair way.
If you have any questions about the change in the AMUSE dues structure, please contact us at [email protected].
3. Tea Talks and More Ways of Making Your Voice Heard!
This is an important time in the life of AMUSE with the signing of our first Collective Agreement, and we would like to hear from you, the members, about issues you think are important as well as suggestions for the future of our union. If you have questions or ideas about AMUSE please email our Labour Relations Officer, Amber Gross at [email protected] .
Another way of getting in touch with us is to come out to one of our ‘Tea Talk’ information sessions, where members of the Executive will be on hand to answer questions and discuss issues.
We will be holding a number of Tea Talks at the end of May and throughout the month of June. Please stay tuned to future newsletters for exact dates and locations.
4. Call Out for Stewards and Chief Stewards
Stewards and Chief Stewards are AMUSE’s eyes and ears in the workplace. They advise members of their rights and responsibilities as casual employees at McGill, and represent members (along with the Labour Relations Officer) on disciplinary and other matters that arise in the workplace
The Chief Stewards are representatives of the general membership who have a voice in AMUSE’s Board of Representatives, the union’s second-highest governing body. This body oversees the work of the Executive, making sure the aspirations of the membership are heard and implemented, and sets the internal and external policies of the union.
If you would like to put your name forward to be a Steward or Chief Steward please email [email protected] , or come to our next meeting of the Board of Representatives which is taking place at 5pm on Monday May 14 at 3483 Peel Street, 2nd floor.
While we are interested in hearing from AMUSE members working in all departments at McGill, we extend a special invitation to those members working at Macdonald campus to apply for these positions.
